D-III Senior All-Star Game returns as Hansen Bowl |
Applications being accepted - Reserve your slot |
To celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the nation's first-ever NCAA Division III All-Star Football Game, USA College Sports, Inc. announced the Hansen (D-III) Bowl and the Inaugural Lombardi (FCS) Senior Bowl will take place on January 16, the national holiday in memory of Martin Luther KIng. The event will be a double-header contested at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. |
| Dennis Wilson, President of USA College Sports, Inc., who is serving his 21st term as President of the Metropolitan NY Football Writers Association, was the creator of the original NCAA D-III All-Star event that was played at Robeson Stadium, East Orange, NJ. He is the Executive Director of the event. |

|
|
| Phil Sokol, Director of Operations for The Sports Network, Dean Kenefick, Associate Athletic Director of Communications for Villanova University and Director of the Philadelphia College Football Writers Association, Scott Meyer, Assistant Commissioner of the Colonial Athletic Association, Kurt Svoboda, Assistant Director of Athletics at Harvard University and Director of the New England Football Writers Association and Patricia L. Porter, Director of Corporate Partnerships/Marketing, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference are members of the Executive Board of USA College Sports, Inc. |
| The original NCAA Division III All-Star Classic was played in 1996 as the New York/New Jersey Metropolitan Al-Stars battled the Philadelphia Area All-Stars to a 12-12 deadlock when the game was halted after a pair of scoreless overtime periods. Paul Guenther, who is starting his seventh season on the staff of the Cincinnati Bengals, made his head coaching debut directing the Philadelphia squad. Dan Garrett, who represented Montclair State as a player on the New York/New Jersey squad, is now the successful head coach of Kean University. |
| On April 6, 1997 the second game took place at Hinchcliffe Stadium in Paterson, NJ. The East All-Stars were coached by Ihaca College's legendary Jim Butterfueld while the head coach of the West All-Stars was Ron Schipper of Central (IA). Schipper, who had a career record of 287-67-3, was the recipient of the first Butterfield Award as the nation's outstanding Division III Coach at the Awards Banquet. The signal callers for the East were Jason Baer (Washington & Jefferson), Deron Jazokas (Massachusetts Maritime) and Neal Weidman (Ithaca). The West squad's quarterbacks were Rino Marconi (Redlands) and Gregg McDonald (Kalamazoo) while linebacker Mike Maslowski (Wisconsin-LaCrosse) went on to become an All-Star in the Arena Football League. |
| Fayetteville, NC was the next venue and the tradition of playing on the Martin Luther King Memorial Weekend began. On Saturday, the players marched in the MLK Parade and on Sunday, the scheduled kickoff time of 1:00PM was pushed back 30 minutes due to blizzard-like conditions. The next game was played in Shreveport, LA where he Black All-Stars rallied to topple the Red All-Stars 16-6 when for the first time in NCAA Division III football, all four major TV networks (ABC, CBS, NBC and the Fox Network) had television crews at the game. On Satrday night, the players marched in front of the largest crowd to ever watch an NCAA Division III football event when 400,000 spectarors at the Bosier City Crewe of Gemini Parade. The event was covered by the local CBS affiliate that was televised live with a three-minute side-bar on the All-Stars as they passed along the parade route escorting the six Royal Floats. Bryan Maher (Wisconsin-Whitewater) split the uprights with three field goals and an extra point while Jesse Ortiz (Lewis & Clark), who was voted the Outstanding Media Player, churned out a game-high 75 yards rushing, including a TD run of six yards at Rodney Dean Field on the campus of Evangel Academy. Tawan Hall (Whittier) was named the Defensive Player of the Game and Mader earned the Special Team accolades. |
| The next 10 games were played in Mexico as the event became the Aztec Bowl matching the Division III All-Stars against a Mexican All-Star team. |
| The 15th renewal of the D-III event has been re-named the Hansen Bowl in honor of Don Hansen who passed away on August 29, 2010. He was the pioneer in covering small college football and was recognized as an expert and served on several committees related to college football awards such as the Gagliardi Award, Melberger Award and Rimington Trophy. He published "Don Hansen's National Football Gazette" and his articles were published in USA Today, Sports Illustrated and Football News. |
Long overdue, the Inaugural NCAA FCS All-Star Game will be the nightcap of the doubleheader. Providing guidance and direction to insure the success of this project is an FCS Executive Board that includes either a commissioner, assistance commissioner or media relaations from all 14 FCS conferences as well many head coaches, including Delaware's K.C. Keeler who has guided the Blue Hens to a national championship. |
